Applicants for admission to John Brown University’s Online Undergraduate program are considered for admission primarily based on academic qualifications. Qualified applicants willing to uphold JBU’s mission and vision are encouraged to apply. As a Christian university, JBU seeks to integrate Christian beliefs and practice into our academic community. However, religious affiliation is not required of our students.
First-Time Freshmen
To be admitted on regular freshman status, an applicant must meet one of the following criteria:
• Degree-bearing high school transcript with a GPA of 2.5 or above or GED and a qualifying entrance exam score:
o Composite score of 20 or higher on the ACT
o Score of 1020 or higher on the SAT (950 for test prior to March 1, 2016)
o Score of 66 or higher on the CLT
Home educated students will be admitted using the same criteria. However, home educated students seeking federal financial aid will be required to submit an officially recognized high school diploma or equivalent.
The Admissions Office is responsible for determining the overall “fit” of an applicant with the university. Academic, social, and spiritual factors are considered. It is helpful for the applicant to provide as much relevant information as possible in determining whether there is a good match between the applicant and the university.
Transfer Students
To be admitted as a transfer student, the applicant must have been enrolled in college for at least one semester following high school graduation, and meet one of the following criteria:
• College transcript(s) showing 6 to 24 transferable credit hours with a GPA of 2.5 or above
• College transcript(s) showing 25 to 84 transferable credit hours with a GPA of 2.0 or above
Each college must send an official transcript directly to John Brown University. Transcripts for all transfer students are subject to academic review prior to acceptance, and a grade of ‘C’ or better is required in each course received for credit. Any transfer student with fewer than 6 transferable hours is subject to standard high school admission requirements.
Non-Degree Students
Students wishing to enroll at the university without pursuing a degree should indicate this on the application form. Applicants may be asked to submit additional academic information, such as transcripts and test scores (ACT or SAT). Credit earned as a non-degree student may count toward a degree only after students reapply and are accepted for admission under regular student status. The reapplication process will include all relevant transcripts and applicable test scores.
Provisional Admission
An applicant who is unable to qualify for admission under regular criteria may be admitted provisionally by action of the Admissions Committee. First-time freshmen and transfer students having test scores or GPAs below the required minimums may request consideration by the committee. Such an applicant will be required to submit a petition letter explaining the reasons for the admission deficiency and describing his/her reasons for seeking a Christian college educational experience, career goals, and plans for succeeding at John Brown University. Applicants will also submit two references from individuals who can attest to the student’s character and academic potential.
A student whom the committee permits to enroll will be required to maintain a 2.0 GPA in the first semester of courses in order to stay enrolled in the program. He/she will also be required to enroll in IDS 1151 “Strategies for Online Success” in the first semester and earn a “C” grade or better in the course. Additional requirements may also be expected. As part of the Head, Heart, and Hand mission of the university, we seek to come alongside these students to offer guidance, encouragement, and accountability.
