REL 3553 Introduction to Buddhism

Three hours (On Campus)
A survey of the growth and development of the Buddhist religious traditions from their origins down to the present. In addition to a study of “Mainstream Buddhism” we will read from the various Mahayana traditions, including “Modern” or “Engaged” Buddhism. Focus will be on primary sources, both textual and visual, with significant emphasis on Buddhist art. Site visits are a part of this class. Meets the Intercultural Engagement requirement or the Arts and Humanities requirement of the Core Curriculum (cannot meet both core requirements).
