Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will conceive and realize artistic concepts through performance or academic scholarship within the discipline of music.
  2. Students will develop the ability to draw from a significant range of musical knowledge and skills in the creation or preparation of a work for premiere or performance. This means the abilities to apply musicianship, analysis, technical knowledge and skill, analytic procedures, and historical and cultural knowledge in integrative ways and to do such work independently. 
  3. Students will develop competencies in music theory (score reading, sight singing, ear training, and improvisation) and analysis (an understanding of music forms, processes, and structures), sufficient to understand musical works and to function professionally in such areas as sight reading, oral acuity, memorization, and manipulating the materials of music. 
  4. Students will develop ensemble and rehearsal skills, including the basics of musical leadership and the ability to work in collaboration with others as a performer and/or composer.
  5. Students will demonstrate a broad knowledge of music history and musical styles. 
  6. Students will demonstrate a working knowledge and application of technology and how it relates composition, score preparation, electronic music production, film scoring, recording, research, and analysis.
  7. Students will develop the skill of reflection and expression of thought as it relates to relationships between music, performance/composition, research and culture.

Requirements for the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree with major in Integrated Music Studies

University Core Curriculum - 42 hours


Program requirements satisfy 6 of the 48 hours in the Core Curriculum.

Minor or Second Major


The Integrated Music Studies degree requires a minor or a second major.

Successful completion of the Upper-Division Applied Admittance Exam in the applied emphasis


Any additional hours in applied area will count as music electives. Any hours taken after passing the Upper-Division Applied Admittance Exam will be taken at the 3000-level for upper-division credit. Four hours of upper-division credit is a requirement for performing a senior recital.
