Economics, B.A.

The B.A. in Economics, with optional emphases in Analytics and Economics Development provides students with a deep understanding of core microeconomic and macroeconomic theory, and exposes students to a broad variety of fields within the economics discipline. The program prepares students to work with data using econometric tools for informed policy decision making. Students choosing the Analytics emphasis will further enhance their skills with data visualization and interpretation. Students choosing the Economic Development emphasis will deepen their understanding of the global economy, trade, development, and poverty alleviation. The program also includes a significant foreign language requirement.

Student Learning Outcomes

In addition to the overall shared student learning department outcomes are program-specific outcomes. The program-specific outcomes for the economics (B.A.) are as follows:

Analytical Skills: Visualize data, compute and interpret statistics, create forecasts, and explain relationships among economic variables, with applications to help solve problems in business and public policy. Communicate analysis effectively, both in writing and orally

Christian Worldview and Human Flourishing: Explain the significance of economic considerations in the fulfillment of God’s purposes for humans from a biblical perspective, incorporating stewardship of resources and love for neighbor.

Global Perspective: Articulate both the opportunities and the challenges created by globalization, international trade, foreign investment, and migration, with a focus on long term development and poverty alleviation.

Economics Knowledge and Skills: Articulate essential theories of the market, economic growth, and business cycles, explain the effects of related public policies, and use data effectively to explore and explain economic phenomena.

Requirements for the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree with major in Economics

University Core Curriculum - 39 hours


Program requirements satisfy 9 of the 48 hours in the Core Curriculum.

  • The Mathematics elective area is satisfied by one of the following: BUS 2193 , MTH 1003 , PSY 2383 
  • Six hours of the Social and Behavioral Sciences elective area are satisfied by ECN 2113  and ECN 2123 .

 

Optional Emphasis:


Students may choose to add an additional 9-hour emphasis; an emphasis is not required for the major.

Foreign Language - 12 hours


Six hours of LS-1000, LS-2000 level courses in the same language with six additional hours from LS-1000, LS-2000 level courses, BBL 2513, BBL 2523, BBL 3513, or BBL 3523; or six hours of LS-2000 level courses.

Minor field or electives as necessary to complete minimum total hours
