Student Learning Outcomes

Students graduating with a major in English will:

Demonstrate a high level of understanding in their field by scoring above the 60th percentile on the MFAT.
Develop and revise a creative idea through several drafts, or assert and support a specific thesis, synthesizing the complexities of the issue and other points of view.
Demonstrate a thorough understanding of context, audience, and purpose.
Use relevant and compelling content to illustrate mastery of the subject.
Use language that communicates meaning to readers with clarity and fluency with few grammatical/mechanical errors.
Draw connections between faith and literary studies, or draw connections between faith and creative writing.
Demonstrate skillful use of credible, relevant sources to develop ideas in a literary analysis, or demonstrate skillful use of interesting and relevant sources in a creative piece.
Demonstrate a full understanding of citing, paraphrasing, summarizing, and quoting secondary sources responsibly.
Demonstrate preparedness to enter graduate school or the workplace in an exit interview with their advisor.
Participate through their vocation in God’s creative and redemptive purposes in the world.

Requirements for the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree with major in English

University Core Curriculum - 42 hours

Program requirements satisfy 6 of the 48 hours in the Core Curriculum.

Six hours of the Arts and Humanities elective area are satisfied by two of the following: EGL 2273 , EGL 2483 , EGL 3273 , EGL 3283 , EGL 3413 , EGL 3713

Writing

EGL 2483 Selected Topics in Genre: Fiction, Poetry, Nonfiction, and Drama (On Campus) (3 to 6 hours)
EGL 4473 Creative Writing Workshop: Selected Genres (On Campus) (6 to 9 hours)
Writing emphasis options:
- Take 6 hours of EGL 2483 Studies in Genre plus Take 6 hours of EGL 4473 Creative Writing Workshop
or
- Take 3 hours of EGL 2483 Studies in Genre plus Take 9 hours of EGL 4473 Creative Writing Workshop

Foreign Language

Twelve hours from one of the following options:

Option A:

Twelve hours specified as 6 hours in one language and 6 hours in a second language; either modern or ancient languages (i.e. Spanish, Greek, Hebrew or Latin). Can be a combination of 6 hours of modern and 6 hours of ancient languages, or 12 hours of modern language, or 12 hours of ancient language, at any course level.

Option B:

Twelve hours in a single language with 6 hours at the 1000 course level and 6 hours at the 2000 course level.

Minor field, area of interest, or electives as necessary to complete minimum total hours

English majors are encouraged to consider Spanish or French as a minor.
