Student Learning Outcomes
The Department of Teacher Education, in keeping with the overall goals of the university, expects graduates to demonstrate the following broad learner outcomes:
- Candidates will demonstrate proficiency with content knowledge in their licensure area by performing well on national licensure exams prior to internship.
- Candidates will demonstrate proficiency with appropriate pedagogical skills by performing well on national licensure exams.
- Candidates will demonstrate appropriate professional dispositions and ethical decision making skills during field experiences and internship.
- Candidates will demonstrate knowledge of their effect on student learning during field experiences and internship.
- Candidates will demonstrate their readiness to teach by obtaining their Arkansas Teaching license.
Note: John Brown University candidates wishing to take professional education and major field courses off campus or through correspondence must obtain, in advance, written permission from the department chair and the Registrar’s Office.
Requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.E.) degree with major in Elementary Education

University Core Curriculum - 33 hours
Program requirements satisfy 15 of the 48 hours in the Core Curriculum.
- The six hours of the Natural Science elective area, including the lab requirement, are satisfied by GSC 1043 and GSC 1053.
- Six hours of the Social and Behavioral Sciences elective area are satisfied by ED 2143 and POL 1013 .
- Three hours of the Arts and Humanities elective area are satisfied by one of the following: HST 2113 , HST 2123 .
Professional Education - 82 hours
This program prepares students for a K-6 Elementary Education teaching license through the state of Arkansas. Electives as necessary to complete minimum total hours
