Intercultural Studies, B.S.

The Intercultural Studies major prepares students to understand, communicate, and engage with other cultures as citizens in a globalized world and as part of our Christian vocation to love the foreigner (Deut. 10:19) and love our neighbors as ourselves (Matt. 22:39).

The  students are encouraged to diversify their academic experience by adding a minor that enhances the ICS degree, in keeping with their vocational goals.

Student Learning Outcomes:

1. Students will be able to apply the anthropological perspective and see groups and cultures through an emic viewpoint.

2. Students will be able to understand various dimensions of culture, including religion, art, music, social structure, etc.

3. Students will be able to engage other cultures interpersonally.

4. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in qualitative research methods.

5. Students will be able to implement skills essential for non-profit work, such as spreadsheets, data analytics, and management of personnel.

Requirements for the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree with major in Intercultural Studies

University Core Curriculum - 36 hours


Program requirements satisfy 12 of the 48 hours in the Core Curriculum.

Emphasis requirements may satisfy other Core Curriculum requirements.

  

Courses Specified by the Department - 9 hours


Intercultural Studies Major Core - 15 hours


Non-Profit Management Core - 12 hours


This required course has a prerequisite that must be met that is not included in the Intercultural Studies, B.S.

Emphases - 9 hours


Students must choose an emphasis; select nine hours from one of the following.

Minor field, area of interest, or electives as necessary to complete minimum total hours


Minimum total semester hours - 120


Intercultural Studies Study Abroad Options


A. Living and Learning in Quito


Students may elect to attend the Living and Learning in Quito Program for one semester.

The student may complete up to fifteen hours.

  • (On Campus and Online) (Ecuador Program: Christian Spiritual Formation 320)
  • (On Campus) (LSQ 3513 - Ecuador Program: Ecuador 250/350: History, Art and Culture)
  • (On Campus) (LSQ 3113 - Ecuador Program:  Community Development 100 and Internship/Service-Learning)
  • Three to six hours of Spanish.
  • Other Core, Major or Elective Credit, such as Biology, Social Entrepreneurship and Leadership, Worldview and World Religions

B. Uganda Studies Program


Students may elect to attend the Uganda Studies  Program (USP) for one semester.

The student may complete up to fifteen hours.
