Integrated Music Studies, B.S.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. The Integrated Music Studies student will perform literature specific to the primary instrument so as to establish the proficiency needed to successfully enter graduate study or vocational work. Proficiency standards specific to General Music students are outlined in the Upper Division Admittance Exam rubric and include appropriate levels of stylistic insight, technical proficiency, musical artistry and scholarly thought process.
  2. The Integrated Music Studies student will demonstrate a thorough understanding of music theory through written and aural mediums based on fundamental theoretical principles of music.
  3. The Integrated Music Studies student will describe and explain the historical development of music – identifying historical styles, performance practices, musical forms, repertoire of different media, and the lives and contributions of outstanding musicians – in order to guide further academic pursuits in various fields of study.
  4. The Integrated Music Studies student will demonstrate a working knowledge and application of technology and software used in composition, score preparation, electronic music production, film scoring, recording, research, and analysis (Finale, MIDI platforms, etc).
  5. The Integrated Music Studies student will develop an understanding of key principles in the areas specific to the general music or and the emphasis declared, such as: education, counseling, business, anthropology, community development, worship arts, pedagogy. Mastery of many of these key principles will be demonstrated on the national Major Field Test.
  6. The Integrated Music Studies student will develop a personal philosophy of the arts influenced, challenged and shaped by curriculum consistent with a Christian worldview. The student will consider how to integrate that personal philosophy into professional areas of declared emphasis as well as into personal faith journey.
  7. The Integrated Music Studies student will use the professional skills learned to serve the community of JBU and beyond.

Requirements for the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree with major in Integrated Music Studies

University Core Curriculum - 42 hours


Program requirements satisfy 6 of the 48 hours in the Core Curriculum.

Minor or Second Major


The Integrated Music Studies degree requires a minor or a second major.

Successful completion of the Upper-Division Applied Admittance Exam in the applied emphasis


Any additional hours in applied area will count as music electives. Any hours taken after passing the Upper-Division Applied Admittance Exam will be taken at the 3000-level for upper-division credit. Four hours of upper-division credit is a requirement for performing a senior recital.
